Helen Mae Hersom, 98, of Alamogordo, died Friday, March 3, 2006, at the Aristocrat.
Mrs. Hersom was born July 1, 1907, in Fonda, Iowa, to Albert and Flora (Keeler) Haven. She married Ora Nels Hersom on April 21, 1935. She was active in all areas of the Presbyterian church in Fonda, Iowa, where she sang in the choir, served in many offices of the Presbyterian Women's Organization, and help with the upkeep of the church building. She and her husband farmed for many years in the Fonda area, and, prior to their retirement in 1979, owned and operated a dry cleaners. After her husband's death in 1980, she moved to Alamogordo in 1984. After arriving in Alamogordo, she was active at Grace United Methodist Church, teaching Sunday school, active with United Methodist Women, and was always available to provide food whenever called upon. Until a few months before her death, she help fold and stuff church bulletins every Friday. Her joys in life were her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, quilting, doing crafts and knitting. She made many afghans for New Mexico State Police to use for accident victims. She spent many hours in both Fonda and Alamogordo caring for the elderly.
Survivors include two daughters, Kathleen Smith and her husband Darrell, of Sac City, Iowa, and Janice Carter and her husband Marshall, of Alamogordo; a former daughter-in-law, Jana Coon, of Farnhamville, Iowa; six grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and a son, Wilbert.
Memorial services will be conducted Thursday, March 9, at 10 a.m., at Grace United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Steve Trout, the Rev. Mary Taken, and the Rev. Tom Richardson officiating.
Cremation has taken place and inurnment will be in Fonda, Iowa.
Cremation arrangements and services are under the direction of Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home.
