Steven John Mortensen, age 75, of Northfield, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, Sept. 20, 2013.
Born in Springfield, Mo., Steve grew up in Rochester, Minn. He married Patricia Ann Curtin and they settled in Brooklyn Center, raising four children. In 1973 Steve realized his dream when he moved his family to a small hobby farm outside Northfield. After his wife Pat's death in 1990, he married Kris Palm in 1992 and welcomed her son Bryan into the family.
Steve was a man of many skills, developing photo and movie camera film for the PAKO Corporation during his years in Minneapolis. In Northfield he moved into a supervisory role for the 3M Dynacolor Corporation. In 1983 he combined his knowledge and entrepreneurial spirit to open Northfield Photo, a family business he operated for the next 20 years until he retired.
Throughout his life, Steve was an automotive enthusiast. He loved antique automobiles and was an excellent mechanic. On his farm Steve raised a small herd of Angus cows and was an all-around handyman. He excelled at word games and was a fearless scrabble competitor. Steve carried with him a quiet strength and wisdom. A hardworking man, he lived an honest life of courage and dignity. He will be sorely missed.
Steve is survived by his wife, Kris Mortensen of Northfield; a daughter, Lynda (Roland) Pavek of Dundas; grandchildren, James, Heather and Jacqueline; a daughter, Ann (Mark) Pfeiff of Mesa, Ariz.; a son, John (Michelle) of Northfield; grandchildren, Nicholas and Cassandra; a son, Mark (Karen) of Vienna, Va.; a step-son, Bryan Levin of New York City; a brother, Wayne (Eve) of California; and a sister-in-law, Peggy Curtin Cunderla of Rochester. Steve is preceded in death by his parents, Jonas and Gladys Mortensen; his brother, John; his sisters, Margaret Stoltzenberg, Marie Keller, Virginia Weeks and Carolyn Henderson; and his first wife, Patricia.
Steve donated his body to the Mayo Clinic to help train future physicians.
A private family celebration of Steve's life will be Oct. 5.
